In this clarion call to tend to spiritual growth, Williamsen provides a much-needed resource for clergy. Discover how to assist parishioners in their prayer and spiritual lives. Learn how individual spiritual growth can flow back into the congregation’s growth as a community. Explore new ideas and practical approaches to using Christian education, worship, retreats, devotional guides, and church meetings as tools to achieve spiritual growth. Learn about

gender differences in spirituality, the importance of your own spiritual life, spiritually grounding lay leaders, and encouraging spiritual friendships and study groups. This book will be helpful for clergy interested in developing spirituality at the individual level; seminary professors who want to help their students explore this aspect of parish ministry; and judicatory executives who wish to encourage their clergy in this area.

Praise for the Book

Attending Parishioners' Spiritual Growth will serve well pastors and others who work with individuals and congregations as they struggle with their spiritual journeys. It comes from one who knows the challenge of that odyssey and who, as pastor, must help other sojourners while balancing the many demands of a pastoral ministry. Although concrete suggestions and models are given, this is more than a 'how-to' book. It conveys a deep understanding of spirituality and its roots in the Christian tradition. Williamsen understands that Christian spiritualism is a loving intimacy with God that enables us to love ourselves and others more fully.” —G. Douglass Lewis, President, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.

“I wish that everyone in church leadership would read this book. It was lived and tested before it was written. And it is grounded in the first priority of all true ministry: nurturing people 'to become more lovingly intimate with God' so that each 'loves God, others, and self.' Tom Williamsen's spirituality is balanced and healthy and humble. His writing is simple and clear, pastoral, and practical. This is a needed book, a manual on ministering, so foundational that one wonders why someone did not write it sooner. Its great gift is to bring all the functions of the church within the sphere of 'the Spirit which gives live.' Read it as soon as you can.” —Grace Adolphsen Brame, Ph.D., La Salle University Graduate Religion Department, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
