Difficult Conversations: Taking Risks, Acting with Integrity

Katie Day

“We don’t talk about controversial issues here!” That seems to be the unspoken rule in most faith communities. The unfortunate results of such no-talk rules are that congregations are noticeably absent from the public forum and members of faith communities fail to develop “social capital.” We do not form significant connections with one another. In this book, author Katie Day invites us to begin engaging in difficult conversations, a process she hopes will become habit forming, a new way of being communities of faith.

Praise for the Book

“All of us face hard issues—about how live our lives, how to build better communities, how to deal with injustice. The problem is few of us want to talk about these issues—especially in church! The dilemmas are too hard to understand; the conversations are too risky. Katie Day challenges us to risk entering these difficult conversations, knowing that in them we will be transformed. With practical advice and the experiences of others, she calls on congregations to become communities where this sort of grace-full transformation finds a home.” —Nancy Ammerman

Difficult Conversations is a gift to congregations that are serious about living the gospel. In an engaging style, Day provides church leaders with solid theory, astute analysis, and—most important—a proven process. Beginning with the basic assumption that trust must replace fear if transformative conversations are to take place, Day weaves real congregational stories to elucidate theory and confirm process. She then proposes tools that will assist congregations to begin and maintain conversations and prepare to act as agents for gospel change.” —Fr. Aidan Rooney
