Dosia Carlson
Praise for the Book
“Dosia Carlson (no relation) does a superb job of fulfilling her claim that this book is one 'by and for congregations.' I was one of the many people whom she called at the outset to find out where significant ministries for older people were being carried out, in my case in the Episcopal Church. She obviously made similar calls to persons in many denominations. The results of her careful research are evident in this book, making it a rich resource for congregations and denominational leaders seeking help in designing and implementing parish programs, not just with the elderly, but also with the growing number of active, mobile elders who provide a great source of experience and dedication for local congregations. If I were teaching a course in the field, this would be one of my basic texts.”—The Rev. Dr. Robert W. Carlson, President, The Episcopal Society for Ministry on Aging
“Local churches, denominations, and theological seminaries have overlooked one of the most important demographic changes in American society, rapid growth in the number of older adults. Dosia Carlson wants this to change and tells us how. No congregation that takes care-giving seriously should be without this book which is passionate and practical at the same time.”—William McKinney, President, Pacific School of Religion
“Here is a book that explodes with program ideas linked with faith living. Each chapter includes examples from congregations complete with name and address for follow-up. Along the way, individuals will find exciting suggestions for the journey. Dosia shares her own stimulating design for adult ministry; life-long learning; exploring the roots of our faith; mentoring those younger, and serving others. Dosia would deny it, but for many of us she is a model of graceful living seasoned with contagious joy and love. She has found what many of us seek. Engaging in Ministry with Older Adults is inspiring to read and touched with sheer fun. If you are looking for something deeper for your life or your older adult friends in the congregation, Engaging in Ministry with Older Adults is a 'must read' book.”—Elbert C. Cole, Founder, Shepherd's Centers of America
For twenty-five years Dosia Carlson has focused her ministry on the aging population. Her career includes being on the staff of a multilevel retirement facility, working with older adults in a local congregation, and founding the Beatitudes Center for Developing Older Adult Resources, an interfaith ministry involving more than over a hundred congregations. She is now associate pastor for Caring Ministries at Church of the Beatitudes United Church of Christ in Phoenix, Arizona.
