Glenn E. Ludwig
When pastors and congregations come together in ministry, they generally do so with the hope that the relationship will be long-lasting and dynamic. The reality, however, is that long-term pastorates are an increasingly rare phenomenon in congregations. While there are many reasons that most pastors can only sustain their ministries in a parish for a relatively limited number of years, Glenn Ludwig argues that this does not have to be the case if both pastors and congregations take deliberate steps toward an enduring relationship.
A seventeen-year veteran in his current call, Reverend Ludwig draws both on his own experience and the research and observations of those who have studied successful long-term pastorates to create an essential guide for sustaining mutual ministry. With an engaging and forthright style, he considers the advantages and disadvantages of long-term pastorates and outlines the key elements that promote them, including:
All who are seeking the joy and depth that long-term pastorates can bring to both pastors and congregations will value the time-tested wisdom of In It for the Long Haul.
Foreword by Theodore W. Schneider, bishop of the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod (ELCA).
“Glenn Ludwig's book is a genuine asset, not only for persons in long pastorates, but for all pastors who have served congregations for more than a month. Though directed at long pastorates, it has information for pastorates of all lengths. He lifts and examines information discovered in the past and applies this in fresh and lively ways. The contemporary pastor (and lay leader) will find this book most helpful in seeking to know ministry from the inside out. Glenn has 'been there' and his love of the pastorate shows on every page. He gives to all who love parish ministry a rich treasure that will last for the long haul.” —William Chris Hobgood
“This is exactly what pastors are looking for: a book which celebrates and seeks to strengthen long-term pastorates. Ludwig highlights the benefts, both to pastors and to congregations, of being in one place long enough for trust to develop and a common life of faith to be nurtured. Communities of faith can exemplify the importance of true, lasting friendship and commitment to a larger culture where relationships are often fleeting and where climbing the ladder is seen as the key to success. In It for the Long Haul shares the wisdom in creating a climate where success is defined differently through lasting bonds.” —Melissa Bane Sevier
