The In-Between Church: Navigating Size Transitions in Congregations

Alice Mann

Alban Senior Consultant Alice Mann draws on her lengthy experience in helping congregations deal with the hurdles and anxieties of expansion or contraction in size. Often, congregations experiencing size change do not recognize the need to change culture and form as part of the successful adaptation process. Mann details the adjustments in attitude—as well as practice—that are necessary to support successful size change.

Praise for the Book

“Alice Mann has written an exploration of size transition that clergy and lay leadership of congregations of all sizes will find insightful and practically instructive, either for individual reading, passing on to others, or for group discussion. Expanding on Arlin Rothauge's size categories, Alice provides analytical tools, stories from real situations, excerpts from others' research, practical hints, and biblical reflections that relate to both up and down size transitions. For leaders and congregations who are confronting the questions, 'What size were we 10 to 20 years ago?' 'What size are we now?' and 'What size is God calling us to be five years from now?' this book provides very valuable guidance.” —Susan W. Hassinger

“Finaly, someone who has accurately discerned the frustrations of churches in transition (what church isn't?) and has faithful solutions. With this concise book, which should be read by clergy and laypersons, Alice Mann, of the Alban Institute, has provided an overview of church size transition theory, practical examples of 'in-between' churches in the midst of change, solid theoretical justifications for considering the work that is involved and the kinds of solutions churches with their governing bodies can easily use to understand themselves and where God is calling them to be. The 'right' book to help you and your church get moving.” —The Rev. John L. Vincze
