More Than Numbers: The Ways Churches Grow

Loren B. Mead

Mead explores what church growth and evangelism really mean in a time when it is mathematically impossible for every congregation to achieve significant numerical growth. He argues provocatively that spiritual, organizational, and missional growth are just as important as numerical growth, and that all four are needed for a truly healthy and growing church. Case studies and discussion questions are included.

Praise for the Book

“Loren Mead's More Than Numbers provides an extraordinary summary of insights gleaned from a lifetime thinking creatively about congregations. This book will be of invaluable help to pastors, theologians, and laity who are committed to helping congregations respond to the enormous challenges and changes we are experiencing in the world and the church. Mead cogently and engagingly redefines growth, and with it our definition of success. His vision of church growth expands to include justice, pastoral care, and spirituality. More Than Numbers frees us from defining growth as a mathematical formula. I urge you to read it and to engage with its implications for your church.” —Dr. George F. Regas

“At last someone has put together in one book the various ways in which congregations grow. While Loren Mead does not depreciate the importance of numerical church growth, it well may be that through maturational growth, organic growth, and incarnational growth today's congregations will bear a stronger witness to a society that cares less about a church's numbers than about its integrity. More Than Numbers is must reading for those who care about how the Christian church will witness in the 21st century.” —William E. Diehl
