God’s Tapestry: Understanding and Celebrating Differences
by William M. Kondrath. Alban Institute, Herndon, Virginia, 2008. ISBN 978-1-56699-363-0
Rarely does a single volume reveal the interconnections among biblical interpretation, social science theory, and practical application in as valuable a way as does God’s Tapestry. Rather than envisioning differences as problems to be overcome, Kondrath moves far beyond simply acknowledging diversity. As Kondrath observes in the Preface, “I distinguish between diversity, which I understand to mean primarily the demographic and statistical fact of differences, and multiculturalism, by which I mean the process of seeing, understanding, and appreciating differences so that they transform individuals and communities.”
Drawing on his own experiences in congregational ministry (with commendable honesty about his own successes and challenges), thorough consideration of relevant biblical material, and insightful application of knowledge gained from the social sciences, Kondrath offers exceptionally valuable insights.
Racial differences provide what Kondrath entitles a “primary example for understanding power and difference;” however, God’s Tapestry is by no means limited to that particular discussion. It applies to the many ways in which power and difference collide. Kondrath sees conflict as a part of life within which creative possibilities may be found, and moves beyond the temptation to understand conflict as entirely interpersonal and focused on “shame and blame.”
God’s Tapestry values feelings as both real and relevant to genuine change in the face of conflict and misunderstanding. Kondrath has produced a user-friendly, practical volume which belongs in the library of any who strive to provide leadership in congregational life.
