Inside the Large Congregation

June  2, 2010 – June  4, 2010
La Casa de Maria(1) , Santa Barbara, California

Facilitator: Susan Beaumont

The seminar is scheduled to begin at noon with lunch on the first day and end after lunch on the last day.

Successful leadership in a small to mid-sized congregation is not enough to prepare a leader for ministry in a large church setting. Those overseeing the work of a large congregation may find the complexity disorienting, unless they understand the unique nature of pastoral, staff and board relationships in the larger setting. Participants in this seminar will explore the dynamics of churches with average weekend worship of more than 400.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • The challenge of alignment and complexity in the large church
  • Size transitions and attendance boundaries on the other side of large
  • The pastors role and how to resolve role confusion
  • Staff team structures and staff team design
  • Board roles and supporting governance structures
  • Growth and assimilation challenges
  • Strategic decision making and the artful use of vision

Seminar participants will complete the Life-Styles Leadership Inventory. Each participant will receive an individualized leadership style summary and will be invited to reflect upon their leadership effectiveness in their current setting.

This workshop is designed for Senior Pastors, Interim Pastors, Executive Pastors, Executive Directors, Middle Judicatory Leaders and Denominational Leaders who want to understand more about the unique dynamics of leading the large congregation.
